In my late twenties, after suffering from Crohn's disease for over 15 years, I underwent an ileostomy. Post-Op, I wanted to pick back up the active lifestyle I once had. I'm the mother of a toddler so it was imperative for me to get healthy again and to have a healthy lifestyle. But the ostomy bag posed some challenges, both practical and personal. It was heavy and I was concerned about the weight of it pulling at my skin, and my scar, taking a toll on my body and the bag itself. But - and I have to be honest - one of my biggest worries was figuring out how to conceal the bag so I could wear the kinds of clothes I wanted without being self-conscious that someone might notice the secret that I was hiding.

All my life Crohn's disease controlled me and now it was time for me to be back in control again. Having a stoma gave me the freedom to live a life that before surgery was filled with many limitations. Now those are lifted. But it wasn't until I started wearing "my special underwear" (that's what I called it to my friends and family) that now I could fully start enjoying life again!

Now, I am wearing dresses and skirts again without worrying about the bag swinging back and forth under my clothes and at social gatherings. I am able to eat and not worry about the bag filling up and becoming noticeable. That "bump," as it fills up, appears smoother because the bag is held up higher rather than dangling by my upper thigh and it is supported flat against my stomach.
